Sea kayaking

Enough of snow! Even tho it has melted in most places the frost has returned and given us piebald patches of ice everywhere. I want my water to be liquid, so I'm turning to my daughter's sea kayaking expedition in September off the west coast of Scotland. Her school runs this expedition every year, just before the days turn too short to make it worthwhile. Although this looks landlocked, it is in fact sea - one of the long fingers of sea loch which indent the west coast.

I'm impressed that she managed to take any photos at all. It can't be easy juggling a camera and paddle in the sea swell. But as well as water we have some curvy rocks:

And a nameless viaduct (to go with last year's random castle). It could be the viaduct that the Hogwarts Express goes over, tho I'm not sure it looks high enough.

  3. Those are great pictures - congrats to your daughter for successfully capturing her adventure while kayaking! (I did this over the summer, but it was only some very tame river paddling and my camera was on it's last legs.) One of these days, I promise I will go on a Scottish kayaking adventure!

  4. Your daughter is certainly a talented photographer...and very brave to go kayaking in what looks like very chilly weather!

  5. I really really really want to do this. I've been sea kayaking once off the coast of Vancouver Island but have never been since I've lived in Scotland. A must do for 2011.

  6. I've only paddled a kayak on lake and river water. I imagine it must be a lot harder on the sea.

I'm glad these are photos from September and not from now. It was making me feel very cold until I read that!

  7. Oh, how tranquil your daughter's trip looks (now, as I am sure it was a lot of work for her a few months ago)! Thanks for sharing!

  9. My youngest son Aaron was finishing his degree at the University of Iowa a couple of years ago. He had put his name on the list and waited a year and a half to be able to take a kayaking course. He now lives in Maine along the ocean and I assume someday he will buy and kayak for the Atlantic ocean. Your daughter took a wonderful photo.
