Drookit

The rain-washed view from the top deck of a number 23 bus today, ploughing through streets like rivers in the centre of Edinburgh. Torrential summer rain, rivers in spate, and tourists crowding into the newly re-opened and blessedly free Royal Museum of Scotland to combine entertainment and shelter. We are all drookit (soaked).

Below, the Royal Mile at 10.30 am. This week, at the height of the Edinburgh International Festival, it should be busy with strolling tourists.

Another hazy bus-top photo, below: the splendidly kilted concierge of the Missoni Hotel on George IV Bridge hails a taxi.

What else to do in such weather but draw the curtains in the evening and immerse in summer reading? You'll detect a common rural theme. No Scottish titles among them, but I do have a title closer to home to recommend in a future post.

  1. Love the gentleman in the kilt. Not something I get to see everyday :)

  2. Ah, the perfect weather for reading. And Romantic Moderns is definitely on my list. Four Hedges I picked up for a friend when I was in London. A gorgeous book. The others are unfamiliar to me, which is delightful because I'm off to investigate! Not much better than new books!

    Enjoy your rainy evening!

  3. i'm sorry it's been so miserable, weather-wise. i enjoyed your pictures, wet as they were, but they gave me a birds-eye view of Edinburgh and I especially liked the one from the top of the bus. also very interesting books ... Romantic Moderns caught my eye.

  4. Thank you for not assuming that an ordinary rainy day in the city is not too mundane for posting. I love getting all these glimpses into the ordinary of your country and your city. Also, I envy your ability to read so many books. The internet has stolen away my concentration.

  5. Is it really a kilt if it isn't tartan (which I think it isn't)? Might that just make him a man in a skirt?
I hope you enjoy the books. Lovely covers on them. Now, I DO judge a book by its cover and would be tempted by all of these.

  6. That's quite the kilt indeed!

I've been doing quite a bit of reading too, so far this summer I've read both Edward Rutherfurd's New York and London and I just tore through Water for Elephants in five days. Time to head back to the book store!

  7. Fascinating photos for me. I don't remember the last time we had a rainy day - probably when I was visiting Seattle earlier this year. Where I live we get regular afternoon thunderstorms, but they move in and out fairly quickly. But rainy days just don't happen! (Nor do we see men in kilts.) I am going to have to visit Scotland one day.

  10. Looks like the August Scotland we know from travelling to the Worlds. This summer I'm reading A S Byatt's Children's Story. A lovely 'new' classic.

  13. I have a bus-top photo of Aberdeen mist from last week! Yours capture the wet, wet rain very well. And what a splendid Missoni kilt! I like your book choices very much. Do please tell us which ones pleased you best.

  14. That photo taken from the bus reminds me of Harry Potter's ride on the "Knight Bus"! 8-) Watch your heads, it's going to be a bumpy ride!

  16. I see you've had some rain.Vi have had little rain in the last period. Now the roses are beautiful, but there are not many left now in late summer.
    Thanks for visiting.
Thank you for thinking of Norway 22 / 7
I never thought this might happen in Norway.
    Greetings

  17. Loved the view from the top of the bus. The kilt one was interesting too!

I am an avid reader. In the evening my husband watches television while I block out what's going on and lose myself in a good book. I will have to try one of yours that you pictured. They all look good, and I too, judge a book by its cover.

  18. Love the blurry wet photies...and the guy in the Missoni kilt...and those last three beautiful book covers. This quiet post is somehow very beguiling. Perhaps it's the indulgence of the idea of losing oneself in a book on a wet day.
