Scottish Easter treats
Is there no end to the Scottish appetite for deep frying? The Cadbury's Creme Egg is a sickly-but-compelling guilty treat, available only between January and Easter each year. Inside the chocolate shell is a fondant which mimics the white and yellow of a real egg. I would show you a photo, but I've already eaten my egg for today. I haven't yet dared tackle the deep fried variety. One day - next year now - in the interests of research.
Or if deep frying is not your thing, how about a cute wee Creme Egg-and-marzipan chick, courtesy of Fisher and Donaldson's bakery in St Andrews.
I had NO IDEA that one of those COULD be deep fried. Sounds scary.
ReplyDeleteI know - is there no end to the creativity of the Scots?
DeleteI'm not familiar with deep fried Cadbury eggs - I must admit that sounds pretty yucky. I thought that happened only in the American South. I've even heard of deep fried BUTTER around here. Sounds like overkill to me. 8^)
ReplyDeleteDeep fried butter! I hope it comes in small amounts.
DeleteI want one of those marzipan chicks! I can't imagine one of those eggs deep-fried since they are already so sweet and over the top.
ReplyDeleteI think I would have to eat one of the chicks bit by bit - the whole package of marzipan and chocolate would be a bit taxing otherwise.
DeleteI usually make Easter Bread or at least Hot Cross Buns......but not this year. We are still in Houston. Perhaps next year. This is only the second time in over 25 years I have not baked for Easter.
ReplyDeleteTexas is big on the fried foods too!
Happy Easter to you and yours.
Linda C
You have other things on your mind this year, Linda. Home-make hot cross buns are delicious, aren't they?
Deletei love Cadbury Creme Eggs. I must say I think the little chicks from St. Andrews are my favorite. Happy Easter to you!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the chick idea anywhere else - must be unique to this bakers.
DeleteI adore Cadbury Eggs. They are my all time favorite candy treat. I have to say that I would be adventurous and try the deep fried variety.
ReplyDeleteThe more I reply to comments on this post, Michelle, the more I'm tempted to try the deep fried variety...
DeleteI've heard of deep-fried Mars Bars in Scotland, but not the Cadbury's eggs. I love those eggs, I wouldn't want to spoil them in any way! We get different varieties here in Colorado - the regular ones you described, as well as caramel-filled ones and dark-chocolate-filled ones for the true chocoholic. Are those available in the U.K.?
ReplyDeleteWe do get different varieties, but they're not so common. I love the caramel ones.
DeleteThose chicks are adorable (also a bit dear!)
ReplyDeleteThat was exactly my thought. That much, for an egg and a few pieces of marzipan??? Nicely shaped marzipan, but still.
DeleteHappy Easter Linda! I'd never seen a hot crossed bun before. Very cool! I'll be pigging out on my Cadbury Eggs tomorrow. I see my Easter bunny got me a few of the chocolate filled ones. Cheers, Jenni
ReplyDeleteYou must try a hot cross bun if you get the chance - or bake them yourself. They're delicious! We've had little dishes of mini eggs - my daughter is the only one with 'proper' Easter egg this year - a gift from a church congregation in Poland after a concert she played in.
DeleteNever heard of these deep fried goodies before !
ReplyDeletewishing you a Happy weekend
anni
Glad to have extended your education, Anni!
DeleteOh those little chocolate creme eggs chicks are so cute!!
ReplyDeleteThey might be good as ornaments, don't you think?
DeleteA very happy Easter to you and your family, Linda! Interesting to see that version of a hot cross bun.
ReplyDeleteAnd a happy Easter to you and family too, Christine. Fisher and Donaldson does seem to be holding out against the trend.
DeleteHaven't had a hot cross bun in a zillion years or so!!! Can't say I've ever had or ever will have a deep fried Cadbury egg...I'm not that fond of Cadbury...but I do indulge in See's Chocolate Easter Eggs!!!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a lovely Easter Linda!!!
Cadbury's isn't exactly gourmet chocolate, I agree, but it has a certain attraction! I've never heard of See's - will have to investigate.
DeleteI am in disbelief at the deep frying specials that Scotland can produce, I only heard of a pizza crunch recently. Hot cross buns sound so much better until they are deep fried too!
ReplyDeleteI hope no chip shop owners are reading your suggestion of a deep fried hot cross bun!
DeleteSadly, we missed making hot cross buns this Easter. We'll have to do them anyway, thanks to your reminder. My mother always made them and it's a sweet memory.
ReplyDeleteEaster baking with one's mum is a memory to cherish, Clair.
DeleteHoly buns, Batman! 8-)
ReplyDeleteIn a nutshell.
DeleteLinda, I hope you had a delightful and delicious Easter Sunday and holiday Monday! Your Easter treats certainly do look delectable!
ReplyDeleteThank you, we had a lovely time, even if the drought broke and we enjoyed torrential rain. But it's good for the plants.
DeleteYour Easter treats sound and look yummy to me. We eat a lot of Cadbury Cream Eggs here at Easter and I love them, but can't imagine eating them deep fried. I wonder what they cover them with to be able to do that.
ReplyDeleteI really missed Easter this year. I was sick with bronchitis.....still am for that matter. I was home alone all day too as my sweet husband was at our church until late afternoon working.
