Edinburgh's Olympic rings

Just to prove that Edinburgh castle is still there, despite its disappearing act in my last post, here's a topical glimpse from one of our very few sunny days.  20 June to be precise.

I have to admit that I'm not really feeling the Olympic excitement.  Ours is not a household that takes notice of big sporting events, apart perhaps of Scotland losing at rugby.  My lack of interest has nothing to do with the Olympics being in London rather than in Scotland - in fact I'm very glad they're there and not here.  I'm much more of a Winter Olympics lass - give me an afternoon of watching the Norwegian cross-country biathlon team and I'm happy.  I dare say however that we will all be pulled in, inexorably, by the time of the opening ceremony.

  1. It's always to see the castle back!! I am with you on the Olympics.....although I am always interested in the synchronized swimming. Amber was in that sport for 11 years and we know many of the girls who compteted in the past and a couple who are competing now.

  5. This is great! Such rings means a lot to all athletes and of course to the oneness of different countries.

  8. I also prefer the winter Olympics over the summer but I have been watching some of the USA tryouts for swimming. I am amazed at the speed of these young participants! :)

  9. I'm curious to see whether the Olympics will grip our family's imaginations or not. I rather think not, but then you never know. I asked our friends in London whether they were excited about them and they said that none of them, and no-one they knew, had been successful in any of the ticket lotteries and they all are feeling a bit left out. Meanwhile, our neighbours down the street in Aberdeen are going as they managed to get tickets for six in the second round. Strange!

  10. I was in England working on a PhD dissertation during the summer Olympics of 1968 and remember following them in the British press. Such a pleasant change enjoying the enthusiasm there for the UK athletes. Thanks for the memory.

  11. I'm one of those people who hates modern stuff placed in historic sites. I mean, put the Olympic rings in the center of a square in the city, or near a stadium or something... why ruin the gorgeous Edinburgh castle with that mess? It doesn't complement, it doesn't work together, it just... ugh.

Your pictures are great, though - not taking anything away from your photos! I'm criticizing the city planners, really. Love this website!

  13. I love how you've carefully framed two of the castle buildings through the rings in that first photo.

There's the beginnings of discussion where I live of Colorado bidding to host the winter Olympics. I have to admit I'm against it - if we're going to spend that kind of money I can think of many things I'd rather spend the money on. Like schools, roads, bridges, schools, schools, and so on.

  14. I passed through Edinburgh this week and was bemused to see the Olympic rings there. Like you I'm not a fan of sport or even the Olympics as an event. And know many folk in London who are dreading the inconvenience and doubt the "legacy"!

  15. What beautiful pictures of a truly beautiful castle! I'm sure you enjoyed the sun that day.

I usually look forward to the Olympics, but having them in one's city can be frustrating. I am thinking of the time when we came back to Los Angeles after living in Florida for eleven months. We had planned to stay for a few years so had leased our home and when we came back we could find no accomodations AT ALL. There wasn't an apartment or house to be rented. All rooms were full. After living in a motel for two months, we finally had to buy a two bedroom condominium........Crazy, Huh? It turned out okay though in the end. We lived there for a couple of years and then made a sizable profit when we sold it. There were so many people that came for the Olympics though that you can't even believe the traffic problems. I would never personally go to an event, but do enjoy watching them on television.

  16. Aye, I am feeling a bit curmudgeonly about the London Olympics. No snow for a start. Like you, I hope I'll get into the spirit once it gets going. The effort and excellence of the athletes is laudable, it's all the advertising and product placement and hype that makes me feel uncharacteristically cynical.

Nice to see some blue sky in the photos - I was beginning to forget what it looked like...!

  17. We were certainly curious when we spotted them welding something in the grass a few weeks ago. I was wondering if it might be something a bit innovative. It's not really but they're big and bright and I think I quite like them. Now they've got the base built, I wonder if they'll put other things on that bit of grass when the Olympics have been and gone.
