Kilgore Rangerettes

The University of Edinburgh's Old College quad is used for various performances during the summer arts festival, but things aren't so exciting during the rest of the year.  However this week the  Kilgore Rangerettes from east Texas performed as part of their 75th anniversary tour of Scotland and Ireland.

In the shot above the performers are just about to land on the grass in the splits.  I didn't get a photo because I was too surprised.  Ouch - I can't begin to imagine how they practise that.  As we say in Scots - they're 'gey swack' - very supple.  When I googled 'swack' I was startled to discover that it means something...very different, if you come from San Diego.

  1. Of course I had to look up what else that would mean. That figures! Quite a beautiful setting for that to be done in!

  2. Interesting seeing a dance troupe from Texas performing in Scotland! Yeah, I'm sure there's words we Americans use that are not-so-nice in Scotland. :)

  3. I find that so hilarious! As if my high school cheerleading team were transported into the Old World. I'm sure the Rangerettes are far more skilled than the high school cheerleaders, but still even they did the "land-in-the-splits" thing. (Why?!) Funny old world we live in.

  5. That's AWESOME!!!!! When Amber was in Synchro she had to have flat splits. She stretched by putting her feet on phone books while holding that split position. It is not easy. The Rangeretts are amazing!
For some reason I have been thinking about Scotland lately. I do so wish Rosamond Pilcher had written another novel. I felt like I was THERE when I would read her books. He son, Robin, wrote one novel but I can't find that he wrote more. I need to watch that last James Bond movie again!

  7. I don't think the usages of "swack" are that far from each other, actually. Especially when one of them is referring to girls who can get their legs farther apart than anyone else... 8-)
