Skywatch Friday - beacon on the hills

Looking down the hilly, cobbled streets of Edinburgh's New Town, across the solid grandeur of St Stephen's Church to the hills of Fife you can occasionally glimpse what seems to be a beacon on the hills. A signal to the clans to gather and raid the Lowlands?

Unfortunately not. It's the flare from the Mossmorran gas plant, which does fractional distillation of North Sea gas into propane, butane and gasoline. But on a day of tearing westerly wind, with the clouds racing across the sky, I wished it was something more stirring.

More Skywatch shots are at the Skywatch Friday site.

And I've just realised that my blog is one year old. It's been fun!

  1. Me too. Was thinking it was the sun setting. But still a photo to be proud of.

  4. Happy Blog Birthday! I'm glad to have found you.

Yes, it's easy to imagine a signal to the clans from this light. I usually stay in New Town when I'm in Edinburgh. This view brings lovely memories.

  5. I does look amazing, even if it is only the flare. If I hadn't read it I would have thought it a red sun setting!

  9. I like the original story. I wanted to see all those clan members coming over the hill.
Yes I saw the sun but the gas torch makes sense. We have them in southern states where the refineries are still allowed to work. It is a wonderful photo.

The big bank notes always make me smile when I see them, I hadn't noticed that someone had tried to remove one though!

  14. Now, the clans would just send out a Twitter post and before you could hit forward to the defenses, the hordes would be upon you!

We have a refinery near by and I find the burn flame fascinating so no apologies for the artificially created beauty.
