Elgol

If I lived in Elgol, this would be my house. The views! The blue door and yellow window frames! The woodburning stove in the extension at the left! (I know it's there because I zoomed in with my camera to have a good look.) And the little path leading down to the road, which ends at the sea a few yards further on where visiting kayaks are drawn up on the beach.

  4. What amazing and rugged mountains everywhere in your photos lately, heaped up every which way in such steep-sided mounds. Very beautiful in an alien sort of way. I'm sure they are even more breathtaking in person.

  18. I did a google maps search for Elgol - what a fascinating place.

Yes I think I could settle in that house for a little house. Your description and photos are very appealing.

  19. Well, we're not all going to fit in! I could put up a few tents, if you don't mind sharing the garden with the sheep...

  20. Well, call it "your" house if you want to, I will only take up a small corner thereof...

  22. Oh, oh, yes, that is MY favourite house in Elgol too! Possibly my favourite house in Skye, in fact, although the competition is fierce. Maybe we could timeshare?! I wonder who really lives there and if they know how many people all over the world are slaveringly envious.

I first visited Elgol with my now-husband on the day he proposed. He asked me to marry him at the top of a hill near Beinn na Cailleach, overlooking Sleat, Raasay, Plockton, Lochalsh, etc etc. Then we came down the hill and drove on to Elgol, stopping at Loch Scavaig for him to play a pibroch to Blaven and the Cuillins on his pipes. It was a perfectly blue, sunny day in high summer. Ahhh.

  23. Help, more of you! Perhaps timeshare is the answer. Someone is going to have to take the winter months, and although Penny thought they might be a dreadful contrast to this bright summer's day, I'll put in a good word for winter in Scotland. Yes the nights are long, but think of the canopy of stars in this remote location, undimmed by any orange skyglow. Yes there are stormy days, but just imagine looking out at the waves breaking on the shore from a cosy spot beside the woodburning stove. Imagine a winter sunset with the rose light suffusing the snow on the mountains...

dancingbeastie, your proposal story is the perfect Scottish proposal. There's a film in there somewhere. Who would you like to play you and your husband?

  24. I suppose it is pretty quintessentially Scotch, as proposals go. I love your idea about who would play us, but I'm not very good at thinking of answers. For me, maybe Cate Blanchett, although my husband would probably say Kate Winslet in her curvy days, before she got all Hollywood and hard-edged. For him...I know it's soppy, but I'd just want himself!

P.S. I'll take the winter months gladly!

  25. My gosh, Linda, is every single part of Scotland just breathtakingly beautiful? I have never seen such beauty in such a relatively small country. We have lovely areas in our country too, but often one has to travel miles to see them. We have so many places in our country that are totally uninspiring, where you travel mile after tiring mile with nothing to look at but dry plains. I suppose each of our states have their own special places of beauty, but we have managed to travel in practically every state in the union and I can just remember how tiring the landscape could get after a while.

Now that I have finally learned how to post pictures on my blog, I will have to try to take some pictures of my part of the country which is mostly desert, but even the desert has some beauty, not much like Scotland though. And I do remember that you got to see some pretty nice scenery when you were in Newport. I love it there, but almost anyplace where there is the ocean and pretty beaches, I love.

I am so glad I came across your blog. I can't even remember how because I don't usually go looking at strange blogs, it just isn't my style. It thrills me though, to know that I am actually communicating with someone in Scotland!!!
