As the days lengthen...

...the frost strengthens, as the cheerful Scottish saying goes.  And indeed it does.  After a night of freezing temperatures and hail on Sunday I looked out to discover my early daffodils drooping with the frost.  I'm waiting to see how resilient they're going to be.

The quad of Edinburgh University's Old College looks Christmas-cardish in the snow.  And what's that little disturbance slightly to the left of centre?

A mini snow...Martian?

All in all, the snow is an excuse for that savoury Scottish morning pick-me-up - a bacon or sausage roll.

  1. The chill looks rather delightful, especially with a nice coffee.

  2. With tea or regular coffee!!! Would 'regular coffee' mean with cream and sugar?
Hope your flower recovers! You have serious weather over there!

  3. Down with the flu here in New York, it's wonderful to visit Scotland in my mind and dream of meat pies and bridies (which I like better than rolls).

  4. I've got a daffodil blooming in my yard right now too. But thankfully no frost or snow!

  5. I hope you will get soon a real spring there! Your daffodil looks so sad.
We got more snow last night but it is quite normal here this time in year.
    Sunny day to you Linda!

  6. It was snowing here30 minutes ago but the sun is out now. No daffodils yet though - they are all still hiding away!

  7. Ohhhh...hope that daffodil recovers!!! No flowers anywhere but in the market here...I keep looking!!! (We still have 4 feet of snow in our yards, while in town we're seeing more and more dirt!!!)

  8. Linda, are you trying to lead me astray? Since becoming vegetarian, the one thing that always tempts me away is a bacon roll, especially on a cold day and with a cup of tea! It looks very cold up there. Take care.

  9. I hope your daffies recover. Could that be an early Easter bunny in the quad? Keep warm.

  10. P.S. I thought it was "... so WE strengthen!"

  11. My little pansies froze solid at night throughout the winter and somehow came back during the warm afternoons. I hope your daffodils do as well!

  12. Thank you for the sympathy about our slow spring. It's still slow - wind-chill today is meant to be minus 4 degrees. I don't know - I haven't put my nose out of doors yet.
Linda, I'm not a coffee drinker, but I take 'regular' to mean ordinary black coffee with sugar and milk if you want, and in 'standard' size rather than large.
So, Marcheline, you're a bridie fan. I still can't get used to calling them 'bridies'. Where I come from in the north east of Scotland they're known as 'bradies', with the 'a' pronounced as in 'bra' rather than 'ladies'.

  13. Just making a return visit to your lovely blog :) There's something inspiring and quite defiant about a daffodil surrounded by snow... Here's hoping for warmer days in both our Scottish cities!
