Skywatch Friday - dark skies

Dark skies over Edinburgh's New Town on my walk home on Wednesday presaged Thursday's haar*, below.  Edinburgh Castle is lurking in there somewhere.

I love livid summer skies lit up by the sun.  I have a feeling this may have been shaped by 1960s editions of National Geographic which I used to devour as a child.  The complete National Geographic is now available on DVD-Rom - sounds like an idea for a birthday present to myself.

*haar - thick fog, often afflicting the East coast of Scotland.

More skies from around the world are at Skywatch Friday.

  1. I love the chimneys silhouetted in the intense sunlight against the dark navy of the sky. A beautiful picture.

    1. The sky is pretty much navy, now you point it out.

  2. I love these photos, with the dark sky behind the sunlit row houses in the first one, and the fog adding so much atmosphere in the second one. We had some of those dark skies the other night...

    1. Any lightning in your dark skies, Al? I'll have to pop over to your blog to find out.

    1. Actually, that's exactly what I did! The clouds were heading my way, and I just made it home as the first raindrops began to fall.

  4. Both skies are awesome. The haar is a lot thick and does block the view.

    1. Yes, very thick, and it smells of the sea! Looks like we have more forecast for tonight and tomorrow morning.

    1. We don't get the bank holiday, Gary! The calendar in my kitchen says 'late summer bank holiday - England and Wales only'. So just about to head out to the garden to try to cram in some tidying up since we were away last weekend - photos to come soon.
Hope you enjoy your holiday tho!

    1. The light does make the white paintwork look very clean. I daresay that close up it isn't, what with city pollution and all, but it certainly sparkles here.

We drove home on a winding narrow mountain road on Monday...with rain, thunder and lightning all around us!!! The season's are getting ready to change again!!!

  9. Both shots are spectacular. But, the first is my favorite with the dark sky contrasting with the brightness of light.

  10. Love the light on the building in your first photo. Yep, when I was a kid, I loved National G. Still do.

  11. Scotland holds a fond place in my heart and I am ever so grateful I got to visit there. I am also ever so grateful to be a follower of YOUR blog where I can continue to get my 'Scottish Fix' from time to time. I do so love your country. But doesn't nearly everyone? A friend on Facebook posed a question recently. Where would travel if you could go anywhere in the world? A large number said SCOTLAND! It's the country, the history, it's the PEOPLE! Thanks for sharing with us.

  13. Amazing contrast in the light levels in the first photo - the glowing sandstone really accentuates the ominous threat of the grey clouds. Judy.

  14. Now I have a name for the blanket of fog which descends regularly during the winter. Often comes at night just when I am ready to return home along country roads.
