Highland mystery tour

This novel advertisement caught my eye in the window of a Broughton Street pub. Tours of Scotland in a beautifully equipped Volkswagen camper van. The company 'Bonnie Campers' has two vans available for hire - Bonnie and Clyde. (sorry about the blurry picture - there was a brisk Scottish gale buffeting me as I took these shots)

What made me stop and look in the first place was not so much the camper vans (I'm not really a car person), but the recreation of a section of Highland road, complete with Highland cows and obviously stunning scenery all around, judging by the rapt gaze of the two tourists. It reminded me of the model farm I had as a child, with all the accoutrements that could be bought to go with it. These included some rather strange plastic trees, which looked as if they had mutated after an unfortunate accident involving nuclear waste.

But what really made me stare was the scene behind the van.

And the fact that the other occupants of the van seemed to be ignoring their distress.

There's even a handily placed phone box - mobile phone reception is patchy in the Highlands - but there's no-one in there dialling 999.

Various scenarios flitted through my mind, but I'd like to hear what you think. What has happened to these unfortunate tourists? Why are their friends just standing there? Are they their friends? And what does the rabbit have to do with it?

Whatever it is, I'm sure it has nothing to do with Bonnie and Clyde. If I didn't live here already and have a car (a Volkswagen!), I'd be hiring one of them to tour the Highlands in retro comfort. Do check out their website - www.bonniecampers.co.uk.

  1. Hahaha, very good spotted, I like your sense of humour!

(I have no idea what happened to the two people on the ground, but they problably fought over the best picnic spot.)

  2. Tim (the guy standing by the van): They shouldna taunted the Rabbit of Caerbannog! I TOLD them he had a vicious streak a mile wide! I told them to just let the blasted rabbit go about his way! Why, oh why did they have to taunt him with lemon cake and finger sandwiches just so they could get a picture of his nasty, big, pointy teeth?? The horror!!

Bob (the guy in the black jacket): Duuuude, Tim! You should see this sign! It's got a picture of our van, man! Sweeeet...

  3. Could it be a temper tantrum by the 2 of them - they don't want to get back in the van?
I think I would love to do this tour - nice capture.

  4. LOL ... that is hilarious. the pictures are funny and your comment on them lying face down is interesting. i think they have may have lost a contact lens. also i've bookmarked the vans ... they look like fun.

  5. Very funny! I think there's nothing sinister going on here. She has lost an earring and they are both looking for it. The fact that their knees don't bend makes the search a slow one. They are moving so quietly and carefully that the rabbit is emboldened to approach.

  6. Got tired and decided to take a nap.

  7. I think they had passed out from the fumes of the exhaust from that old van. That is funny!!

  8. Very inventive suggestions!

Lothianne, that's entirely possible. They will have wanted to get the best view of the Loch Ness Monster.

Shauna - hilarious. I had a suspicion that the tourists were American, and Bob's 'Duuuude' confirms it. By coincidence, I have a picture of the Rabbit of Caerbannog beside my desk at work.

RedPat - holidays do tend to bring out the worst in some people, so I can see that they might be having a temper tantrum.

Journeys to Scotland - it's certainly going to be hard to find a contact lense in that grass. Perhaps the rabbit has eaten it.

Christine, I love the non-bending knees!

Blue Heron Moon - all that fresh Scottish air could well have tired them out.

  9. Dear me, those kids must have eaten too much and are now having a nap! Their parents are so relieved to have a break from their bickering and that could care less that one of them is sleeping partway on the road!

  10. Linda, what a fun post. The bunny looks suspicious to me.

This is my first time to visit your Occasional Scotland blog.

  12. I think there was poison in the food in the picnic basket. The two on the ground were unfortunate to have partaken of the food. I think the man standing must have poisoned his traveling companions.

  13. Linda - Thanks for your post, I am the owner of the restaurant and the camper business and I found this because loads of folk had clicked on the link. There is nothing sinister going on, we just muck about and have the characters doing different things - hoping to catch peoples imagination, which seems to have worked!!

  14. Karine, seeing the lovely picnic basket I'm sure it's possible that they've overeaten. These baskets cost a fortune nowadays. My parents got one as a wedding present and I can't find it in the attic. I hope it didn't get thrown out.

Welcome to Occasional Scotland, Donna! I too have my suspicions about the bunny...

Linda, you've gone for the disaster option! Scottish food is really quite acceptable as a rule. I wondered if they might have eaten too much home baking and were lying down to ease their indigestion.

Richard, congratulations on Bonnie and Clyde, and your intriguing window display. Perhaps some readers will be tempted to book a holiday one day. I was going to contact you through your website to tell you I had posted, but the wonders of Google Analytics or similar beat me to it!

  15. That's hilarious! Driver was going along, trying to follow the wiggly white lines. Bunny ran out from the left so he swerved to avoid it and hit two people. He thought he would reverse back to loot their picnic, which he found intact. He's just thinking about taking a photo because he's pleased that he avoided runing over the picnic hamper. His wife has gone to find a box to take the rabbit home in as it's obviously an escaped pet and not wild. It might even belong to the picnikers so he's doing his good turn for the day by giving it a home.
