Royal Wedding - a nation of shopkeepers

From John Lewis's understated notice inviting us to raise a cheer, to Royal Warrant holders Penhaligons with their English vintage perfumes, Scotland's shop windows have embraced the Royal Wedding.

Scottish souvenir shops are flying the flag.

John Lewis will sell you a Cool Britannia rug.

And of course mugs and plates and tea towels a-plenty in Emma Bridgewater.

In St Andrews, home of the first stirrings of royal romance, every window has a royal theme. Some are refined, such as this antique shop window.

The latest fashion - a wedding cake of cheese, in I. J. Mellis cheesemongers.

I'll leave you with the place where it really all started. Well, one of them. Enjoy the day!

  1. Yes, we must have both been posting about Royal Wedding displays at the same time this morning! Your post is far more comprehensive than mine - very impressive. I hope you've enjoyed the cake, tiaras, and of course your allotment. (As one does.)

  2. Those are some cool displays. I'm not sure what to think of the wedding. Never really paid much attention to the Royal Family. I have a friend who's nuts about Prince Charles. Go figure. I suppose she's in heaven about right now.

  4. What a historic day for you all - thank you for sharing your shop window pictures! I am sure it is quite difficult to get away from all of the activity but your pictures do tell a tale of a fairy tale wedding.

And, no matter how one might feel about the necessity of the monarchy in this age, one cannot deny that William and Kate absolutely glow with happiness and love for each other!

    Slainte!

  6. This is so fun to be able to see as our media doesn't cover these sweet things. I really like the 'cheese' cake. Thanks for sharing ~ cheers, Jenni

  7. The rug is nice, but in this context it seems ominous. What do you think its message could be?

  9. How spectacular it must be to be in the midst of the pomp and circumstance. I remember watching Diana and Charles's wedding, as it happened. I saw Kate and William's wedding but only pieces of it, as shown in the news. Some of my friends here in my hometown had wedding parties, wearing tiaras and eating crumpets. I've seen some pictures from the parties; looks like everyone had a grand ole time.

  10. As a former Brit, I'm glad I didn't have to see the royal mania any more than I did! But it's nice to see your photos of it.

  11. The first picture perfectly sums up how I felt once the Royal Wedding was finished...HIP HIP HOOORAY.

And I can proudly say that I never watched even one minute of the Royal wedding...

  12. Seems like the entire world was excited about this wedding...

Lots of good will for these two!

  13. How can I have let over a week go past without replying to comments? I don't quite know where the time is going just now. Hard to believe it was only a week ago that TV, internet and newspapers were still doing wall-to-wall coverage.

There seems to be a fair cross-section of royal wedding opinion here, from avid watchers to total avoiders. London Is Cool, your royal wedding experience was the same as my football world cup one! And Svenske Floyd, I imagine that Scots who favour Scottish independence would find the rug ominous. I'm not one of them - proud to be Scottish, but I also feel British.
But probably the best thing about the whole day was the day off work, complete with an allotment afternoon!
