Dalek Jubilee

Warning: you are now entering the wilder reaches of Jubilee fever.  I wonder if Mrs Queen knows about the Dalek celebrations of her Jubilee?  This is the City of Edinburgh Libraries Dalek at the Central Library.

Doctor Who is such a global export that I'm sure Daleks will be familiar to many.  Just in case, you can read about them here.  In a nutshell, they're an alien mutant race which famously invaded Britain despite their inability to go up or down stairs.  I am of the generation which hid behind the sofa when they appeared on TV waving their little sink-plungers (sorry, death rays) while threatening to 'exterminate!' in their chilling metallic voices.

There is, I discover, a Dr Who episode called 'Jubilee'.  This is all getting very in-joke-ish.  The Queen and Prince Philip seem to be having a jolly time despite it all.

Apologies for the blue-ish tinge of the photos.  I set my camera to 'tungsten' setting for indoor shots, but it seems that the light was half indoor, half natural light.  The central lending room is a lovely light spaceI'll remember that next time I take a photo of the library Dalek.

  7. Completely, gloriously potty. Thank you for sharing the urban Jubilee lunacy with us rustics, who have to go miles in the car in search of even a token tin of Jubilee shortbread.

The daleks used to scare the pants off me too. I was right there behind the sofa. I'm a bit unnerved by the Queen now: do you think she's waving them on in that photo, with her sink-plungers disguised under white gloves? Or are the daleks giving the royal wave? It's all getting too confusing.

  9. Sounds like the Jubilee is a great celebration there. I love to celebrate almost anything, so I'm sure I would have a fun time. So glad you had a link so that I could see what these Daleks are all about. They look to be interesting little creatures, but I probably would have been behind the couch too as anything the least bit scary would have me leaving the scene if I could.

Have a great weekend (or what's left of it anyway).

  10. Golly! how funny to include the daleks. I am with you and Dancing Beastie hiding behind the sofa. "I am a Dalek .... " seems so long ago. I hope you have a lovely Diamond Jubilee.

  11. My comments seem to be eaten up by your blog for some reason (apologies if they are still in a queue to be moderated). I wanted to thank you for the link to my blog, and for these hilarious Jubilee posts. The Jubilee Dalek is only something that could exist in Britain. Not having grown up with Dr. Who, I never really understood why my husband for example had been terrified by them. Your remark about their "inability to go up or down stairs" made me laugh out loud!

  12. You would hardly know the Jubilee was being celebrated in Calgary, even though she is also our queen. Thank goodness for other blogs who are having a merry time. I would love to get my hands on the Marmite poster. I would display it in my kitchen for all my Marmite hating friends and family to gaze upon. And yes, I was terrified of the Daleks too.

  13. While we in the States are proud of and protective of our form of government, and our 1776 rebellion from the Royal Court....I think we collectively miss and have a wishful fondness of the pomp and circumstance of the Royal family...we get a vicarious sense of history and tradition by watching all things Royal!!! Thanks for sharing your Jubilee!!!
