First fitting

I'm sorry, I really didn't mean the title of this post to be a pun on first footing. I'm writing about the first fitting session for my son's kilt. But 'first foot' in my dialect of Scots would be pronounced 'first fit'....

Anyway, here's the young man trying on a sample kilt to see how his own kilt is going to be shaped at the waist and over the hips. We learned a lot about how the pleats would be sewn, and how the kilt would be made to sit slightly higher at the waist to allow for any last extra bit of upward growth. And because our son is very slim, any filling out in later years will be catered for by extra hidden pleats that will wrap under the flat front of the kilt.

The tartan of the sample kilt is Nicolson. Our son's been deciding which of our family tartans he wants. Probably the only time in his life that our engineer-to-be will be seen poring over swatches.

  1. What an amazing coincedence :) I came here tempted by your comment on my blog, only to find out that we have actually quite a few things in common! My husband was born in Scotland (he is not Scottish, but due to his fathers post (work) there at the time, he happened to be born there). And: our son is also engineer-to-be :) (We live in Finland).

Handsome young guy, your son! And quite posh a kilt! Should I purchase one for my hubby, too. Wonder if he has a birthright to one (what are the colours of Montrose?) --

Thank you for your visit to my blog, I'm so glad that the world has 'shrunk' to a convenient size due to the Internet :)

  3. What a great photo! Wish I has Scots ancestry, was very envious of my daughter marrying in to some one who has. Even my 2 sisters went to a presbyterian school and wore the tartan (black watch), I was the odd one out and our school uniform was deadly boring grey!!

  4. Okay, your not going to believe this (well, since your getting to know my love of Scotland so well....you might just believe it! lol)....when I read the title of the post, I thought it to myself in your dialect! lol....LOTS and lots of words/phrases that I do that to. Cant help myself! Love it! Love all the sporrans in the background too. And the bottle of Irn Bru on the counter! lol He looks great in his kilt!

  6. Nothing much better than a man in a kilt.

Is it true that they each take 7.5 meters of fabric?

  10. I studied in Bristol and had some Scottish friends so I understand the 'kilt' dilemma pretty well. All the best!

  12. I like it how the local national clothes are part of the every day life and living well in the modern day. He won´t be so slim the next time he has to use those clothes. that´s for sure.

  13. gotta love a handsome young man in a ...oops, I almost slipped...in a kilt! That's a delightful expression you caught.
I do love the tartan pattern & colors. My husband would go gagga over it. (...and don't speak too soon...this same man - an engineer thru & thru - took sewing lessons & made several most excellent wool, plaid shirts.)

  14. Love this picture of Alex, Linda!
Good to know that your Dad is doing some better and hope that you are feeling better today.

It will be interesting to see which tartan he chooses. He can't lose! They are both handsome.
