First footing

Why bother with a lump of dirty coal as the traditional first footing offering at Hogmanay (New Year) when Tesco can supply you with chocolate?

Coal or chocolate, a Happy New Year to all! I'm just back from an internet-less 2 weeks in the north, where the snow has been piling up, and I've discovered how difficult it is to take photos of all that white stuff.

  3. I wouldn't take chocolate coal on a first footing, I would eat it because I love chocolate even if it does look like coal. Hope you had a good holiday in the snow.

  4. Welcome back. I think I would just eat the chocolate and stay stay inside.

  5. Customs practiced throughout the world interest me. One of the reasons that we hosted exchange students was to share each others' customs and culture. Interesting that a lump of coal figures in a Scottish New Year tradition. Here in the U.S, if a child misbehaves during the year, he may find a lump of coal in his Christmas stocking.

  8. It is quite the challenge to take interesting pictures of snow, which is why I reverted to icicles for awhile. And, chocolate coal any day, if it's good chocolate.
