Haar - a word of Dutch origin describing the cold sea fog which often afflicts the East coast of Scotland. It has hardly been daylight here all day. On the Royal Mile this lunchtime the church spires disappeared into the blanket of grey, and the smell of the sea penetrated the centre of the city.
A very interesting scene. Jack the Ripper can't be too far away!
ReplyDeleteYes, it sure gives the place an eerie feel!
ReplyDeleteAppears to be a scene out of a horror movie. Then again, when I lived in the Midwest, we used to call this a sunny day. We were just happy to be rid of snow.
ReplyDeleteBrrrrr, that looks freezing!!
ReplyDeletevery unique photo...you can almost smell the fog..
ReplyDeleteGreat photo, I can feel the cold damp atmosphere of the haar!
ReplyDeleteI love this shot - it looks like everything will be swallowed by the mist. Extra weird moment today: this weather was perfect for the film crew who were shooting around Waverley station. There were film folks hauling Christmas trees past my office window. So strange.
ReplyDeleteSure looks dreary. Hope the sun breaks through for you tomorrow. :-)
ReplyDeleteWe've had 2 days of rain and I'm hoping for some sun too!
I feel almost claustrophobic even though it´s outside! Everything is so tightly packed. Brilliant capture.
ReplyDeleteNice foggy shot, it was the same here last monday ;)
ReplyDeleteImpressive street scenery!
ReplyDeleteNow I know what "Haar" means. Many thanks.
This picture actually makes me miss Edinburgh - the last few weeks when I was there the weather was almost too hot (I have to walk quite a bit everywhere). I don't think I've ever seen the Royal Mile like this, or smelt the sea from the city :( Wonderful atmosphere in this shot and description.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I must admit I'm a big fan of foggy weather.
ReplyDeleteExcellent capture. Chills me to the bone! B Squared is correct - we in the Midwest are just glad to be rid of the snow when we have these foggy days.
ReplyDeleteWe'll be getting fog soon - a warmer, coastal fog known as our June Gloom.
ReplyDeleteThat's an intense photo. I can just feel the cold.
Ooch, it's a dreich day in Caithness an' all.
ReplyDelete>> A very interesting scene. Jack the Ripper can't be too far away!
C'mon! Burke and Hare!
