Suspending disbelief

Dalwhinnie (population: 80) is a scattering of houses, a hotel, a whisky distillery and a tiny railway station in the Central Highlands. Just off the main north-south A9 road, which used to run through the village but then it was bypassed with a straighter road. Only very slightly straighter - and certainly not a dual carriageway - oh no! Trains do stop at the station, but in my experience it's a bit like Adlestrop: 'No one left and no one came/On the bare platform.'

So if it is twinned with Las Vegas, I'll let you judge who has the better deal from the arrangement.

  1. I just laughed out loud with a shocked "Oh. My. God." Fantastic. More of this. Let's twin Tongue with New York and Greenock with Tokyo.

  2. Having said that, on my recent trip north, I found it absolutely indispensible for a pee break. Clearly marked, relatively clean and more to the point, OPEN.
Could you say the same for Las Vegas? ;-)

  3. Just an absolutely gorgeous place on earth!

  4. Purest Green: I agree - like twinned with like is so OLD.

Neil: the attractions of Dalwhinnie as a pee break should be more widely marketed. There's something for Visit Scotland to do.

Valerie: it is pretty scenic, even on a dull October day.

  5. Hi Linda,
What a good post, looks like a lovely place to live.

Came by to say hello and wish you a good Halloween weekend.
    Love,
    Herrad

  6. Your day here looks much like mine, except we have a peep of blue. Fun to see your photos. A friend went to Las Vegas last week, overflowing with traffic and people, lights and noise, a wee bit different.

  7. Oh Lord, give my Dalwhinnie over Vegas any day of the week!!

  8. Although there are plenty of places to pee in Las Vegas, I would pick Dalwhinnie any day!

  9. Tammie Lee, Pamela and mountain mama: I've never been to Las Vegas, but I have National Geographic images of an onslaught of lights and over-the-topness lodged in my mind. So I think I would probably pick Dalwhinnie too. The hotel has a large menu, including tofu burgers, and a log fire to sit by while looking out at the un-Las Vegas view.

  10. Well, Las Vegas certainly has the glitz, but I'd take your views over that any day!

  11. I've been to Las Vegas and believe me, I would take Dalwhinnie any day!!!!

  12. LOL! Cynical self is wondering if it is council junketry, but I do agree with the pee stop - much ncer that that House of Bruar place. xx

  13. I guess they can dream. I really like the country side photos. The cupolas are unique on the buildings. I wonder if they vent a lot through them or if they are just for show.

  14. I loved this blog Linda and I know where I would rather be and Vegas would NOT be my choice.

  15. I would have to agree with all the others here, Dalwhinnie would be the desired place. How could they even be compared?!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Having been to Las Vegas once and sworn never to return, I believe Dalwhinnie is the superior spot.

  17. Funny indeed , your shots are beautiful !

  18. If I had to make choice between the 'twins' it would be Dalwhinnie for sure. At leat there is distillery:)
    Nice week to you.

  19. Dalwhinnie is winning, then. I did pop over to Las Vegas Daily Photo and Another Las Vegas Daily Photo to get a comparison, and it wasn't all glitz and The Strip, to be fair.

Jacqui, I agree with you about 'that House of Bruar' place!

Larry, the cupolas are the traditional shape for the kiln that dries the malted barley. The shape keeps the peat smoke around the barley longer.

  20. True. To be fair, the desert surrounding Las Vegas is stunningly beautiful.

  21. The only thing that Vegas is good for in my book is.....dry heat. Otherwise....I'm happy to skip it.

  22. Living in the US and knowing what Las Vegas is like. Id choose the "pee break" any day! lol Linda: hope your doing well. Sorry Ive been away for a couple of weeks. Lots going on. Hope your doing well.

  23. Thanks for glitzy and glamorous tour around Dalwhinnie. I have to come down after all the excitement now.

  24. I used to live in Scotland so I have added you in my blog list...always fun to see photos from that amazing place...

  25. I had no idea it was twinned with Vegas. Seems a strange choice.

I've never been drawn to LV, give me Dalwhinnie any day.

  26. Petrea and Tammi, the idea of the desert around Las Vegas is attractive, as is that of dry heat. I don't think Dalwhinnie is familiar with the latter.

Kristina - life is busy just now all round. Likewise I've been short of time to visit blogs.

Chrome3d, hope you're calming down now.

Gennasus, I'm suspecting some tourist stunt. I googled Las Vegas/Dalwhinnie/twinning and didn't get anything.

Cathrine and Zyzzyz, thanks for visiting.

  27. Twinned with Vegas?@!#&! Someone was sleeping! Your photos are beautiful.
Thanks for sharing and have a great week.

  28. I prefer Dalwhinnie!

No casinos and fine whiskey ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Kayani, Dalwhinnie usually has moody skies!

Carolyn, I'm not sure if Las Vegas realises this.

Kiji, I thought you might prefer the fine whisky!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh, my. I'll take your town any time!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm glad most of you agree how awesome my home village is! My dad works in the distillery making the whisky!! It is a beautiful and peaceful place, if not a little cold at times! I love going home :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. clairz, nice to discover your blog.

Sarah, I'm honoured to have a Dalwhinnie native visiting! It is lovely. We usually try to stop off on our way north.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks for the laugh Linda. Maybe Las Vegas casino owners are hoping for some free whisky samples.

I always enjoy visiting to see a wee bit of Scotland - you have a wonderful sense of place :-)
