Festive, Moray style

We were in two minds about the tastefulness of these Christmas tree decorations in Johnstons of Elgin cafe. On the one hand the mill produces tweeds worn by gamekeepers and lairds, so pheasant tail feathers adorning a Christmas tree seem quite in keeping. On the other hand, they struck us as somewhat removed from the peace and goodwill message. Perhaps we're growing soft down in the pampered south.

More comforting, in that familiar hasn't-changed-a-bit-since-I-was-a-child way, was the window display in Walker's of Aberlour. I was glad to see that this vast enterprise, purveyor of shortbread to airport shops all over the world, still has its retro window display of Christmas cake, mince pies, shortbread and Ecclefechan tarts. And against a holly-patterned cloth that reminded me of the Christmas wrapping paper of the 1970s.

  1. It was great to see both of them. Victorian ornaments included a lot of feathers attached to ornaments. The cookies look good but I have eaten way too much this past few days.

  2. I know what you mean...the feathers are pretty.

And wouldn't every gent like an Ecclefechan tart (love the name...never tasted one. I'll have to go on a mission to find one now.)

Hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas. I bet it was filled with music and joy.

  4. What is an Ecclefechan tart? Is it like an Eccles cake in tart form? Hope you had a Merry Christmas!

  5. I remember eating hot mince pies after a Church Carol Service on Union Street St. in Aberdeen last December! VERY tasty! I made mincemeat crescents (small turnovers) this year using a cream cheese pastry.
I think your decorations are PERFECT!

  7. I like the feathers on the tree. They are so less commerical, however there is a sadness to them as well.
I love Elgin and love shortbread but actually prefer Deans.
The window display is nice and comfy looking.

  9. I love that window display - very retro indeed - Walkers is one of my favourites for New Year goodies.
Not sure about the feathers, given that we had pheasant the other day :)
Hope you are enjoying the daft days, Linda - warm wishes for the New Year. xxx
