Skywatch Friday - spot the new

Edinburgh Castle, seen from The Vennel, against a rare blue sky this week. Old and new together - spot the new.

A 'vennel' in Scots is a passageway between the gables of two buildings. As with many Scots words it comes from French, in this case 'venelle', meaning alley or lane.

More skies, blue or not, at Skywatch Friday.

  4. I am sorry we didnt make it further in to Scotland but on these holidays from home not everything gets done so your photos are a great way of seeing it all.Would love to think I will get back one day but at my age it is probably doubtful!

  8. I just love the flag flying proudlyl in the breeze. The buildings seem to be at one with the rock in the cliff.
I love the coloring of the tower.
    Great picture all around.

  12. That scene could be straight out of a period movie if it wasn´t for the tiny satellite dish. I just keep thinking if that is really the best place to build a castle. Looks a bit difficult for me, because I´m the unhighlander.

  13. Splendid image, Linda. And it's interesting to notice that there is an unexpected satellite dish on the top!

  17. You just can't go anywhere these days without seeing a satellite dish, now, can you?

  18. Easy to spot the dish, a sharp contrast to the castle. Great shot.

  19. Thanks everyone for the comments, and well spotted! I should clarify that the satellite dish is not on the castle - the perspective just foreshortens it and makes it look as if it is. I'm so used to the view that I forgot that it might be assumed that the dish was on the castle itself. Oh no! We have a ferocious organisation called Historic Scotland that safeguards the...'historicness' of old buildings and vetoes changes or modern additions.
