Skywatch Friday - farthest north

This is as far north as you can go in mainland Scotland. We are at the top of Britain, at Dunnet Head. Beyond, the turbulent waters of the Pentland Firth, and then Orkney.

All buildings seem exposed in this flat landscape. Imagine this white house in the winter dark, with gales screaming in from the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the North Sea on the other.

But as compensation there is this crescent of deserted beach.

One of our very few glimpses of Caithness outside of the Mod, on our less than 24 hour stay.

Other skies around the world are at Skywatch Friday.

  3. Great pictures of the coast, I suppose it is a bit chilly out there.
I think I watched a documentary on the BBC (Coast from the OU) about the point most north of Scotland.
    Love your photographs !

  4. Quite a lot of the shots in my family's holiday albums are of my brothers and I wearing woolly jumpers on deserted beaches in the North of Scotland - but we are always smiling! It's truly a beautiful area.

  11. So beautiful! I can only imagine I'd want to stay indoors should there be a gale. An exclusive beach sounds like a pretty good tradeoff though.

  12. You have such an interesting place to live when you live on a very very large island. It really looks rough up there but I like the sky.

  17. I put one toe into the North Sea in Scotland once, and that was cold enough for me, but this scenery is starkly beautiful. I'd love to see it, but not to over-winter there. The dampness along with the cold would be too much. Thank you so much, though, for sharing your wonderful photos with us.

  19. That is an incredibly beautiful but desolate landscape. Thanks for sharing!

Our neighborhood is exposed to winter weather as well. We can sometimes get several feet of snow in 24 hours, with howling winds the whole time. It can make for very large snowdrifts that on occasion can trap you in the house for days (maybe once every five years). But luckily it's usually sunny, even in the winter.
