Skywatch Friday: Cycling Project - secret beaches
Day 4 of the Cycling Project, and a glimpse of Gruinard Bay and its secret beaches. The main beach is on the right, and if you enlarge the photo you can see the the others. Pink sand, all sorts of shells, and at this time of year no people. The sky looks rather summery - in fact it had been hailing a few minutes before.
What my son didn't take a photo of was the pleasant island lying out to sea from the bay. Pleasant and for many years deadly - Gruinard Island was deliberately contaminated with anthrax spores during a World War 2 bioweapons experiment. Decontamination is now meant to be complete, after much spraying with formaldehyde and various test flocks of sheep being landed on the island.
Day 4: Poolewe to Ullapool, 50 miles.
Other skies, with and without hail, are at Skywatch Friday.
Lovely shots, may your cycling trip have many more.
ReplyDeleteGreat Photo for SWF and the closeup of the beach was very interesting. Sky, hills, water, and the lake shore; you have it all in your picture. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful area, great shots.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.

Oh, the wonderful West Coast......apart from the midges! Did they encounter them on the cycle?
ReplyDelete50 miles in one day, that's a lot of pedalling!
I haven't been to Gruinard Bay but it's on my list. Thanks for the view.
That's WoW! I don't know what to say about that! It'll be habitable soon, then? WoW!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful scene in the 1st shot
Love that pic of Gruinard Bay. I have one very similar somewhere. Must dig it out. I know the exact spot you took this from. There's a wee car park/passing place on the corner where you can stop to take this shot. Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great looking place despite the hailing.
ReplyDeleteI hope all the best to the test sheep.

Hi Linda, in answer to your question ... yes we did find quite a few fossils. Leaves, clams and some little fish called 'Nevada Stickleback'. I have a couple of photos, of some of them, in a 'Camera Critters' post, that I did on May 9th, if you're interested in seeing them. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great photo...the water has many shades of color, so pretty...I like the hills also and the pink sand shows even in the first shot...Gruinard Bay is beautiful..I love Wednesday's photo...such vastness to it...
ReplyDeleteI love this place, we were there last year, saw our first sea eagle, had a lovely walk on that beach, and yes it hailed then too, in June.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful area! Great shots too.
